Emerging With Power:

"Perhaps the best indicator of her campaign's impact is the effect it had on individual lives. All over the country, there are people who will never be quite the same... If you listen to personal testimony from very diverse sources, it seems that the Chisholm candidacy was not in vain. In fact, the truth is that the American political scene may never be quite the same again"
~ Gloria Steinem Ms. Magazine 1973

Chisholm emerged from her presidential campaign with more power and won her House seat back with 90% of the vote. Throughout the next ten years she continued to fight for welfare reform, job development, an extension of minimum-wage coverage, and more. Additionally, she co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women and she earned a seat on the influential Rules Committee, the first African-American to be on this committee. She fought for people of all backgrounds and continued to break barriers to allow for equality for all.

"Of course laws will not eliminate prejudice from the hearts of human beings. But that is no reason to allow prejudice to continue to be enshrined in our laws - to perpetuate injustice through inaction."
~ Shirley Chisholm

"I'll bring another voice to the committee...having to do with people who've been rather voiceless and powerless"

Her presidential campaign also inspired and opened doors for the next generation of women leaders, especially women of color, to get involved with the fight for social justice.

"When Shirley Chisholm died on Saturday (January 1st, 2005), she had fulfilled her life's mission-to break barriers... The most visible legacy of the first African-American woman in Congress are the 14 of us who now serve for whom she broke one of America's toughest barriers"
~ Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton
